Words to the Wise: What if...

Ann's Article: "3 Steps to Holistic Health - Think, Speak, Act"

"I am a diabetic." "My arthritis is acting up." "I am a cancer patient." "I am fat and I always will be." How many times have you heard people refer to themselves in this way? Taking ownership in this way is destructive. Why would you want to personally take ownership of something like arthritis or diabetes or any other disease? Yet we say things like this without really thinking about it all the time.

Every disease you can think of begins with an imbalance. That imbalance is caused by nutrition, habits and lifestyle that are out of harmony. All the cells, organs and systems of our bodies were created to work synergistically. That simply means they are meant to work together harmoniously. When your blood sugar is stable and balanced, you rarely develop cholesterol problems. When your diet includes healthy fats, your skin and joints are healthy. When you consume adequate clean water and fiber your digestive system works at peak performance and your blood fats remain balanced as well. So why does it matter what you call yourself? Your thoughts and speech are an important component of your lifestyle and habits.

What you say about yourself is extremely powerful. The Bible puts it this way in Proverbs 23:7 "For as he thinks in his heart, so is he." There is a natural progression. First you think the thought. That thought produces an electrochemical reaction, releasing chemicals that correspond to the type of thought it is. Fearful, anxious, sad and angry thoughts release specific chemicals. Happy, loving, kind and peaceful thoughts release entirely different chemicals. Each type of thought affects your entire body differently. These chemicals actually carry the emotion behind the thought you think throughout your entire body. That thought can actually change your whole system. Experiments were conducted which proved thoughts, feelings and emotions all create energy and have either a positive or negative effect on DNA structure. Your thoughts can create health and vitality or support illness and disease at the genetic level.

So, your thoughts are step one. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you..." Everything begins as a thought. Words originate in our minds as thoughts before they're spoken. Thoughts focused on become beliefs. Out of those beliefs we speak and act.

Thoughts then become spoken words. That's step two. Continually speak them and you can actually manipulate your physical body. Neurologists confirm that the speech center in the brain controls all the nerves of the body. According to James 3:2, 6: "We all make many mistakes, but those who control their tongues can also control themselves in every other way. And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is full of wickedness that can ruin your whole life. It can turn the entire course of your life into a blazing flame of destruction..." If you continually say you are tired, weak and have no energy, guess what? Your body will have no choice but to obey your words!

2 Corinthians 4:13 says, "We too believe and therefore we speak." Those spoken, power-packed words are the "fullness of your heart" (Matthew 12:34). Words contain power. In fact, Proverbs 18:21 tells us "death and life are in the power of the tongue" and science is confirming that truth - literally. God created everything that exists by His Word (Genesis 1). We are the only creatures who can use our words as He does, by speaking them intentionally. These thoughts, beliefs and spoken words then become expectations. Consider Jesus' responses to these people who sought physical healing:

To the woman with the issue of blood: "Your faith has made you well." Matthew 9:22.
To the blind men in Matthew 9:29: "According to your faith be it done to you."
To the centurion seeking healing for his servant: "Go; it shall be done for you as you have believed." (Matthew 8:13)

Mark 11:23 tells us that if we believe that the words we say shall come to pass, and not doubt in our hearts, we will have what we say. This is referred to as the law of faith. Pastor Creflo Dollar defines faith as "a practical expression of confidence in God and His Word." According to Romans 10:10, "with the heart a person believes and so is justified and with the mouth he confesses and confirms salvation." The same principle works in our physical bodies. The woman with the issue of blood (Matthew 9:20-22) illustrates it beautifully. She heard about Jesus and thought about what she heard. Her continual thoughts became a belief that He could heal her. That belief became the words she spoke over and over creating the expectancy of her healing. Then she put action to her faith (practical expression of her confidence) and touched the hem of His garment. Her expectation was fulfilled.

If you are dealing with a blood sugar imbalance, please do not refer to yourself as "a diabetic." Think and speak about yourself as a person who is in the process of correcting a blood sugar imbalance. Don't own that disease - you are more than just a malfunctioning pancreas! You are an eternal spirit, who uses their soul to think, feel and choose, and who lives in a magnificent physical body. Steps one and two are to control your thoughts and words. Step three is to take the correct action. Learn what you need to change in your nutrition or lifestyle and then (as a popular commercial says) just do it! You don't have to make every change all at once. You can take baby steps. Just be certain to begin and then to continue. That's how you will correct imbalances and experience true holistic health. Just think, speak and act!

Guest Article: "Habitual Thinking Made Easy" Part Two by Rob Clinton

Last month, I talked about the ‘why’ behind procrastination, and some initial ingredients for moving into the direction of avoiding procrastination. We are now in the planning hour and writing down all the cool things that we ‘get to’ do! Fun Stuff...

Now on your notepad, if there were any items left in your “Emergency Interruptions," it could mean you procrastinated because you didn’t handle the emergencies, but go ahead and merge those into your planning hour that you are currently doing. Take all of your notes and categorize them into groupings.

o   Real Dreams: These are wonderful ideas that you will implement in your lifetime.
o   Within 5 Years: These are the thoughts that you will see happen within 5 years.
o   This Year: These are the thoughts that you will see happen within 1 year.
o   This Month: These are the thoughts that you will see happen this month.
o   This Week: These are the thoughts that you will see happen this week.
o   Tomorrow: These are the thoughts that you will see happen tomorrow.

Now so you get the big picture, let’s only talk about daily tasks. So take your ‘Tomorrow’ list and separate your daily tasks into Hard, Medium, and Easy. We’ll call them Boulders, Rocks, and Pebbles. Pay attention to the part of the day where you personally have the most energy, and focus your most difficult tasks during that timeframe.

Visuals work also, and are in fact very effective. So be sure to print a hard copy of your planning sheet, so it creates a visual presence for you of what needs to be done. You could try putting them on flashcards as well. Let’s say you have a stack of 6 flashcards for the day with a certain task on each. Keep those flashcards with you. By the end of the day your goal is to have none, because after you complete each task, you will tear up that particular flash card and throw it away as a visual sign of completion. Demolition works well for a lot of people. Rip that card up like you mean it!

On the flash card write 2 things for each goal.

1.   Why the task needs to be done.
2.   The reward you will give yourself for completing this tasks. It maybe as simple as a walk on the beach.

Now it also helps if you can tell someone about your day ahead. If you have a spouse that’s great, if not then try a friend, another relative, someone you can trust to hold you accountable. Don’t tell anything to negative people about your goals. Try to avoid scoffers or negative conversations all together. Keep the spiritual bubble around your space as full of inspiration as possible. You want support, not confusion that obstructs your thinking, especially if someone’s skepticism is aggressive.

Now the day has begun. Take Action. You are only given 24 hours. Make it count! What are you going to do with that time? It’s the same amount of time given to all the great people of the past. We don’t know for sure if tomorrow will be here. So treat that day as such. Like it’s the last day, and you want to make sure you’ve given that last day everything you’ve got.

Lastly, when you finish your tasks, reward yourself as you promised on your flashcards.

Happy Habits!

Nutrition Nugget: Fat Part 2

In order to improve your health, and maintain your eyesight, nerve and brain health, keep metabolism high and stabilize your mood, the types of fat you eat can make ALL the difference. Last month we spoke about regularly including healthy omega-3’s and monounsaturated fats like olive, macadamia and walnut oil in your diet. Both omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential to health, however, the ratio of the two is what is critical. Most of us consume way too much omega-6 fats (corn, vegetable, soybean, safflower, sunflower, grapeseed, canola and cottonseed oils, grains, grain-fed meat and processed foods). In fact the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 for most of us is between 20 and 50 to 1 instead of approximately 4 to 1! According to Dr. Mercola the proper ratio is 1:1. The best strategy is to increase sources of omega-3 in your daily diet (wild caught salmon, tuna, sardines, walnuts, flax seeds, omega-3 eggs, grass-fed beef, cod liver and krill oil). You may be surprised to learn that using bottled salad dressings, which are typically made with vegetable oil, greatly increases your risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, a recent article by Dr. Paul Beaumont of the Macular Degeneration Foundation said, "[The research] showed that people eating vegetable oil got the disease (macular degeneration) twice as commonly as the people who didn't. Even more convincing was a study that looked at patients with the disease. Those eating too much vegetable oil progressed at 3.8 times the rate of those eating a little vegetable oil." Fat is essential to life and health – but eating the right fats in the correct amounts is critical. Keep eating the salad - just make your own dressing with flax or olive oil!

Supplement Spotlight: Iodine

While this mineral is best known for it's role in metabolizing fat and keeping the thyroid gland healthy, it's also essential for physical and mental development in children. Once again, this is a "trace mineral," meaning only very small amounts are needed to maintain health. In fact, excessive intake can cause diarrhea, vomiting, swollen salivary glands, mouth sores and a metallic taste in the mouth. I don't suggest you use iodized table salt. Table salt is simply sodium chloride and can cause high blood pressure. Unprocessed sea salt contains over 80 naturally occurring minerals, including iodine, in trace amounts your body can use. Foods that are high in iodine content include sea vegetables like kelp and dulse, seafood, asparagus, garlic, mushrooms, sesame seeds, summer squash, turnip greens and Swiss chard. Keep in mind that certain foods block uptake of iodine into the thyroid and can cause or aggravate an already underactive thyroid. Those include brassica vegetables like cabbage, brussels sprouts, etc.; spinach, turnips, kale, peaches and pears. If your thyroid is underactive, limit consumption of these foods or simply eat them cooked, not raw. You can also include a sea vegetable seasoning with your unprocessed sea salt on your foods to ensure you get adequate iodine.

Word to the Wise: What if...

I don’t know who to give credit to for this, but it was forwarded to me by a friend. Since I have thought along these lines and asked myself similar questions about our culture’s addiction to technology and information in general, I offer this for your consideration…
•   Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone?
•   What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
•   What if we flipped through it several time a day?
•   What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
•   What if we used it to receive messages from the text?
•   What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it?
•   What if we gave it to kids as gifts?
•   What if we used it when we traveled?
•   What if we used it in case of emergency?
•   So, I ask you: where is your Bible?
•   Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phone, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus has already paid the bill!
•   Makes you stop and think about where your priorities are, doesn't it?
