Rebuilding Adrenal Health

Jun 18, 2009

Did you know? Up to 85% of all illnesses stem from your emotions! Stress/fear/anxiety/anger loom large as very destructive emotions. As we discussed last week, stress is the primary cause of adrenal exhaustion. This week as promised, here are some practical steps you can take to rebuild adrenal health:

The most important thing you can do to correct any health imbalance is clean up and improve your diet. First the “don’ts”: Eliminate sugar, refined carbohydrates, processed foods and alcohol and either eliminate completely or severely reduce caffeine intake as caffeine is a stimulant and too much stresses the adrenals. Plan your food intake around natural,
whole foods as God created them! This is the foundation of the 3-D Living Program. Focus on clean protein (including nuts and seeds), which balances blood sugar and produces adrenaline; fresh fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamin C, bioflavonoids and minerals – fuel for the adrenals; beans and legumes which are fiber-rich and stabilize blood sugar and
healthy fats, which also regulate blood sugar and fight inflammation.

Next, there are some natural supplements you can include that will help rebuild your adrenals. A good, whole food multi that contains vitamins and minerals is a great start. Vitamin C and B-complex are very nourishing to the adrenals. Minerals are particularly important for adrenal function. Studies show that mineral deficiencies are at the root of every health problem! Green drinks like wheat grass and spirulina are an excellent
source of trace minerals as well as protein and fiber and are very alkalizing as well. A good source of Omega-3’s such as cod liver, krill or flax seed oils will reduce inflammation. The amino acid L-glutamine can improve your intestine’s absorption of nutrients that can be compromised during stress. Astragalus, an adaptogenic herb is also nourishing to the adrenals and helps your body adapt to stress. Other good choices are Holy
Basil or Tulsi, Rhodiola or Siberian Ginseng.

Rest and adequate sleep are critical. Take time to rest and refresh yourself every day. Unplug from the stressful routine and enjoy nature, go for a walk, read a book or listen to music you love. Sleep is so important – your adrenals are replenished between 11 pm and 1 am. If insomnia is a problem, taking 10-30 milligrams of zinc before bed may help and reduce cortisol, a stress hormone, as well.

Regular exercise is a wonderful way to release stress as well as
endorphins, those ‘feel good’ brain chemicals. If you are suffering from adrenal fatigue, keep your exercise moderate to low in intensity so you don’t stress the adrenals any further.

Water. Adequate hydration is just foundational for good health. The basic formula is one-half your body weight in ounces daily.

Learn and consistently practice stress management techniques. Constant negative thoughts lead to overproduction of stress hormones. So, becoming mindful of your thought patterns is number one. The 3-D Living Program addresses spirit, soul and body – including negative thinking. Remember the Lord tells us in His Word – as a man thinks, so is he! Prayer, meditation, faith confessions, praise, worship and gratitude are excellent
methods of stress management. So is reframing and practicing mindfulness.

Finally, one of the most neglected and effective stress relievers is deep breathing. Deep breathing encourages relaxation. It is your built-in stress releaser! It lowers heart rate and blood pressure and eases muscle tension. You can visit http://www.heartmath.org for some great ways to
manage stress that use deep breathing and accessing positive emotions like love, care and appreciation. If you have found this information helpful, let me know!
