Did you know? Moms ALWAYS know best! Do you remember your mom telling you not to wolf your food down – to slow down and chew your food well? Did you think it was just an “old wives’ tale?” Well, you should’ve listened – because mom was absolutely right!

According to a study reported on WebMD, eating too fast can block the hormones that make you feel full, resulting in overeating and weight gain. Besides causing you to eat more, these new studies reveal that eating too fast hinders the release of hormones that signal your brain to stop eating.

The NY Times reported that according to a study, a group was given the same size serving of ice cream on two different occasions. One time they took 30 minutes to eat the serving and the next time, they scarfed it down in 5 minutes. They released more “feel full and satisfied” hormones when they ate it slowly!

According to a 2008 study, subjects also reported feeling fuller when they ate slowly. They also ended up consuming about 10% fewer calories when they ate at a slow pace as opposed to when they rushed through the meal.

If all this doesn’t convince you, a third study found that eating quickly, until you feel full, TRIPLES the risk of being overweight! I hope you will become more aware of how fast you eat and make a conscious effort to slow yourself down.

Today's the Day 7-Week Fitness Plan

Eating more slowly and chewing your food may seem like “no-brainers” but how many of us actually do this? "Today’s the Day" approaches aspects of weight loss no other “diet” does. For instance, why is it important to detox your spirit and soul? And where to you begin? How do you nourish yourself properly? Why is resting and rebooting your spirit, soul and body so important? You will learn all this – and more!

Chewing your food thoroughly is more important than you may realize. It not only slows you down, which will automatically result in your eating less, but digestion begins in your mouth! In fact, most of your digestive enzymes are in your mouth and the more thoroughly you chew, the more nutrients are made available to your cells.

You take so much stress off your digestive organs when you eat this way. And, if indigestion and “reflux” have been problems, losing weight, eating properly and improving your ability to fully digest your food by slowing down and chewing thoroughly can cause those problems to vanish!

Finally we are to eat in peace, slowly, mindfully and gratefully. Savor the aromas, flavors and textures. Relish the meal's presentation, and don't just dig in like someone’s chasing you. It makes a HUGE difference to your digestion and your overall health.

When you sit down to eat while you are upset, angry or stressed out, your digestion suffers. Plus, you may just throw caution to the wind in order to comfort yourself and eat more than you need (or intended) to.

And approaching your meals mindfully – fully aware of the taste, texture and smell of the food – AND with an attitude of gratitude, activates your parasympathetic nervous, which is the repair system. Your body is better able to use the nutrients you are taking in to repair and replace cells, creating vibrant health.

Next week we’ll talk about the major food groups and how you can use them to best achieve your fitness goals!

Until next week, as always I wish you overflowing, abundant health, peace and joy and I call you BLESSED (empowered to prosper and succeed)!
